The Anchor Stories

The Anchor Stories

In the premiere episode of The Rabbi Way, host Vic Harmon introduces the five anchor stories most Western Christians know—Adam and Eve, Noah, Moses, David, and Jesus—and shows how these familiar narratives form the outline of the biblical story. But between these well-known moments lies a story we often skip: the story of Joseph.

This season we slow down and rediscover Joseph’s world—his culture, his geography, his family line, and his place in God’s unfolding plan. In Episode 1, we explore where Joseph fits in the biblical timeline, why his story bridges the covenant God made with Abraham and the birth of the nation of Israel, and how understanding his context brings the whole Bible into clearer focus.

If you’ve ever wanted to understand Scripture more deeply, see familiar stories with fresh eyes, and reconnect with the historical and cultural world of the Bible, this episode is your starting point. Grab your Bible and your curiosity—your journey begins here, on The Rabbi Way.

WEBVTT

00:00:31.839 --> 00:00:39.920
Welcome to the Rabbi Way, where we don't just read Scripture, we posture our hearts like the disciples to sit at the feet of Rabbi Jesus.

00:00:40.079 --> 00:00:46.159
Through this podcast, we will be stepping back in time and rediscovering the stories we thought we already knew.

00:00:46.399 --> 00:00:54.719
As we learn together, we will begin to see the details we missed, the stories we've forgotten, and the thread that ties the entire Bible together.

00:00:55.039 --> 00:01:06.480
I'm Vic Harmon, and this season we are diving deep into the story of Joseph and his multicolored coat, exploring the history, the culture, the geography that surrounds his story.

00:01:06.719 --> 00:01:11.359
Our exploration will be slow, yes, but intentional.

00:01:11.599 --> 00:01:21.519
As we learn about Joseph and his life, we will begin to understand him better, see his purpose in the biblical narrative, and how his story still impacts us today.

00:01:21.760 --> 00:01:29.840
So grab your Bible, your curiosity, and maybe some sandals, and get ready to learn with us the Rabbi Way.

00:02:42.080 --> 00:02:52.879
The Torah is the first five books of the Old Testament Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy, all memorized by their thirteenth birthday.

00:02:53.439 --> 00:02:57.439
This gives every practicing Jewish person the same foundation.

00:02:58.080 --> 00:03:04.159
If you want to know what it means to be fundamentally Jewish, you read and embody those five books.

00:03:05.039 --> 00:03:10.400
In our Western American culture, we also have a common foundation that unites most Christians.

00:03:10.960 --> 00:03:15.919
Some would argue that it's the Christmas and Easter stories, which is partially true.

00:03:16.560 --> 00:03:21.599
While others would argue it's the entire New Testament, which is also partially true.

00:03:22.319 --> 00:03:29.599
But I believe the commonality taught to most Western American Christians are these five main stories of the Bible.

00:03:30.240 --> 00:03:34.479
Adam and Eve, Noah, Moses, David, and Jesus.

00:03:35.199 --> 00:03:39.039
These are the stories that are fundamental to the Western Christianity.

00:03:40.080 --> 00:03:44.080
But there is so much more to the story of God than these five stories.

00:03:44.960 --> 00:03:50.479
As I was working on my first doctoral project, one of the people I was interviewing made this metaphor.

00:03:51.039 --> 00:03:55.360
Pretend like you were looking at a blank coloring sheet that has the outline of a picture.

00:03:55.919 --> 00:04:00.639
And though you can see what the picture is, it is not beautiful until you add color to it.

00:04:01.120 --> 00:04:02.800
Until you add shadows and light.

00:04:03.439 --> 00:04:06.960
These are what give it color, depth, and make the picture come to life.

00:04:07.840 --> 00:04:10.960
For the Bible, these five stories serve as the outline.

00:04:11.520 --> 00:04:18.319
We understand the point of scripture based on these stories, but it's the stories that fall between these five that bring the color.

00:04:18.720 --> 00:04:23.199
It's the historical and cultural and geographical backdrop that brings the depth.

00:04:23.519 --> 00:04:26.480
And it's the Middle Eastern lens that makes it come to life.

00:04:27.600 --> 00:04:39.600
So today, as we begin our journey together, I want us to pause and take some time to do a quick overview of these five anchor stories to refresh our memory of the story we are encountering.

00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:42.160
You have likely heard these stories before.

00:04:42.319 --> 00:04:54.000
I don't think anything about today's episode will surprise you, but I want to start very broad and invite you to uncover where the story of Joseph fits between these stories we already know.

00:05:29.120 --> 00:05:30.319
At the beginning.

00:05:36.879 --> 00:05:42.959
God created light, land, space, animals, and humans from absolutely nothing.

00:05:43.199 --> 00:05:48.480
It was a perfect world designed for humanity to live in perfect unity with God.

00:05:48.800 --> 00:05:51.600
There was only one rule in this perfect world.

00:05:51.839 --> 00:05:57.120
Don't eat from the tree in the middle of the garden, the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

00:05:57.839 --> 00:06:02.399
But the serpent came and deceived Eve, convincing her that God was holding out on her.

00:06:02.959 --> 00:06:08.639
She ate the fruit of the tree and gave it to Adam, and he ate it, and sin entered the world.

00:06:09.360 --> 00:06:13.439
What was once perfect unity with God was now division and shame.

00:06:14.720 --> 00:06:18.720
We fast forward a few hundred years, and Noah enters the scene.

00:06:19.360 --> 00:06:24.399
By this point, humanity is so deep into sin that everyone did what they felt was right.

00:06:25.040 --> 00:06:35.680
Genesis 6, 5 says, The Lord saw the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only on evil all the time.

00:06:36.879 --> 00:06:39.680
But Noah found favor with God.

00:06:40.399 --> 00:06:43.759
In a world full of wickedness, Noah was righteous.

00:06:44.240 --> 00:06:49.920
God came to Noah and commissioned him to build a boat because he was going to flood the earth.

00:06:50.560 --> 00:06:55.759
This was strange and out of the ordinary because no one had ever seen rain at this time.

00:06:56.160 --> 00:07:00.000
So Noah starts building the ark just as God had instructed.

00:07:00.319 --> 00:07:05.120
God told him to put two of every kind of animal on the boat, and so he did.

00:07:05.439 --> 00:07:15.439
Once the ark was completed and two of every animal made it onto the boat, Noah gathered his wife and his three sons and their wives, and they all boarded the ark.

00:07:16.240 --> 00:07:19.920
God shut them in, and then the rain started.

00:07:20.399 --> 00:07:23.839
It rained, it rained, it rained some more.

00:07:24.079 --> 00:07:27.040
It rained for forty days and forty nights.

00:07:27.920 --> 00:07:30.240
But then the rain stopped.

00:07:30.560 --> 00:07:34.000
And it took a full year for the water to recede.

00:07:34.399 --> 00:07:47.600
And when it did, Noah, his family, and all the animals left the Ark and were tasked with this one mission: be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth.

00:07:48.800 --> 00:07:56.959
God made a covenant with Noah through the rainbow, promising he would never destroy the earth by flood ever again.

00:07:58.319 --> 00:08:04.560
Then we fast forward a few thousand more years, and we have reached the story of Moses.

00:08:05.519 --> 00:08:10.240
Moses' story is found in Exodus 1 through Deuteronomy 34.

00:08:10.639 --> 00:08:13.439
But we typically talk about the highlights of his life.

00:08:13.920 --> 00:08:15.199
Specifically three.

00:08:15.680 --> 00:08:18.079
The first being his birth story.

00:08:28.240 --> 00:08:37.840
Next time we see Moses is in the Burning Bush encounter, where he is shepherding in the wilderness and he sees a bush on fire, but it's not burning up.

00:08:38.240 --> 00:08:45.840
God speaks to him through that bush and tells him to return to Egypt and confront Pharaoh to let the people of Israel go from slavery.

00:08:46.720 --> 00:08:51.919
Moses goes to Pharaoh and reports what God has said, but Pharaoh refuses.

00:08:52.399 --> 00:08:58.399
And God brings ten plagues upon Egypt, ending with the death of the firstborn child.

00:08:58.799 --> 00:09:01.519
And God brings Israel out of slavery.

00:09:02.639 --> 00:09:06.000
Lastly, we get the story of the Ten Commandments.

00:09:06.480 --> 00:09:14.879
Moses has been leading the people of Israel in the wilderness, and God calls him up to the top of the mountain and gives him a list of rules to follow.

00:09:15.440 --> 00:09:26.960
God establishes a covenant with Moses and with the people of Israel that if they will commit to following these commands, God will always be their God, and they will always be his people.

00:09:29.200 --> 00:09:34.639
Then, if we fast forward another few thousand years, David enters the story.

00:09:35.200 --> 00:09:39.600
David was a shepherd boy who was anointed to become the next king of Israel.

00:09:40.000 --> 00:09:41.759
But it didn't happen overnight.

00:09:42.320 --> 00:09:48.639
He is most known for his battle against Goliath, where he defeated a giant with a slingshot and a stone.

00:09:49.279 --> 00:09:52.480
But David grows up to be the greatest king of Israel.

00:09:52.960 --> 00:09:55.360
He has his downfalls for sure.

00:09:56.000 --> 00:09:59.440
But he is still known as a man after God's own heart.

00:10:00.080 --> 00:10:05.120
God established a covenant with him that his descendants will always be on the throne.

00:10:06.960 --> 00:10:16.480
Lastly, if we fast forward another couple thousand years, Jesus is born to a virgin girl named Mary and her fiance Joseph.

00:10:16.960 --> 00:10:26.480
This miraculous birth we celebrate every year at Christmas time when we remember that God made himself a human so that he could dwell among his people.

00:10:26.960 --> 00:10:43.200
As Jesus grows up and begins his rabbinic ministry, we hear stories of how he healed the sick, fed the hungry, calmed the storms, and went to the darkest places, all culminating at this public display of a gruesome yet innocent death.

00:10:44.159 --> 00:10:52.320
This is what we celebrate on Easter, where Jesus, who never sinned, died on the cross for the sins of the world.

00:10:53.200 --> 00:11:04.480
However, his story did not end there because he rose again on the third day, ascending into heaven, sitting at the right hand of the Father, and is still alive today.

00:11:05.360 --> 00:11:07.759
This is the outline narrative of the Bible.

00:11:08.240 --> 00:11:10.320
Hopefully, this was reviewed for you.

00:11:10.720 --> 00:11:14.080
But if not, welcome to the journey of studying scripture.

00:11:14.480 --> 00:11:17.120
There is always more to learn.

00:11:18.480 --> 00:11:25.279
Now, as you may have noticed, we did not talk about Joseph or his multicolored coat in these five main stories.

00:11:25.759 --> 00:11:27.200
But there is a reason for that.

00:11:27.519 --> 00:11:31.759
In our Western culture, we usually skip over the story of Joseph.

00:11:32.639 --> 00:11:38.000
Now, you may have encountered the story in Sunday school, or perhaps you saw the musical.

00:11:38.399 --> 00:11:43.519
But fundamentally, our culture, more often than not, skips the story.

00:11:43.919 --> 00:11:51.039
Yet Joseph's story is vital, not just for the existence of humanity, but for the story of God.

00:11:52.080 --> 00:11:56.320
Joseph's story falls perfectly between Noah and Moses.

00:11:57.120 --> 00:12:00.639
After the flood, but before being enslaved in Egypt.

00:12:01.519 --> 00:12:06.320
Joseph's story falls during a time period known as the Patriarchs.

00:12:06.720 --> 00:12:11.039
The biblical patriarchs are Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

00:12:11.600 --> 00:12:16.240
They are known as the Patriarchs because they are the beginning of the Israelite people.

00:12:16.879 --> 00:12:22.159
God made a covenant with Abraham that he would have descendants as numerous as the stars.

00:12:22.879 --> 00:12:25.440
Joseph is one of those descendants.

00:12:26.000 --> 00:12:33.840
His life is a bridge from the promise God made to Abraham to the fulfillment of that promise with the nation of Israel.

00:12:34.879 --> 00:12:38.639
Joseph's story doesn't begin with a coat or with a dream.

00:12:39.360 --> 00:12:41.279
It begins with a family tree.

00:12:42.399 --> 00:12:49.600
So next time we'll trace that tree and find out how Joseph's roots tell us everything we need to know about his future.

00:12:50.639 --> 00:12:54.879
Until next time, remember every story in the Bible is intentional.

00:12:55.120 --> 00:12:57.039
Every detail is significant.

00:12:57.360 --> 00:12:59.440
Every person is critical.

00:12:59.759 --> 00:13:02.159
This is the greatest story ever told.

00:13:02.320 --> 00:13:08.720
And if we take the time to slow down and pay attention, we will experience God like never before.

00:13:08.960 --> 00:13:10.480
See you next time.

00:13:22.639 --> 00:13:25.759
This episode was written and produced by me, Vic Carman.

00:13:26.159 --> 00:13:29.759
Music is historic cinematic adventure by Dimitri Torres.

00:13:34.240 --> 00:13:35.919
