WEBVTT
00:00:17.120 --> 00:00:24.879
Welcome to the Rabbi Way, where we don't just read scripture, we posture our hearts like the disciples to sit at the feet of Rabbi Jesus.
00:00:25.120 --> 00:00:31.359
Through this podcast, we will be stepping back in time and rediscovering the stories we thought we already knew.
00:00:31.600 --> 00:00:39.119
As we learn together, we will begin to see the details we missed, the stories we've forgotten, and the thread that ties the entire Bible together.
00:00:39.359 --> 00:00:49.920
I'm Vic Harmon, and on this season, we're diving deep into the story of Joseph and his multicolored coat, exploring the history, culture, and geography that surrounds his story.
00:00:50.159 --> 00:00:54.560
Our exploration will be slow, yes, but intentional.
00:00:54.799 --> 00:01:04.319
As we learn about Joseph and his life, we will begin to understand him better, see his purpose in the biblical narrative, and how his story still impacts us today.
00:01:04.640 --> 00:01:13.040
So, grab your Bible, your curiosity, and maybe some sandals, and get ready to learn with us, the Rabbi Wei.
00:02:14.159 --> 00:02:18.639
Throughout this entire season, we've been asking questions about Joseph's storage.
00:02:18.800 --> 00:02:24.319
We started with the basic questions of who, what, when, where, why, and how.
00:02:24.639 --> 00:02:27.120
From there we began digging deeper.
00:02:27.360 --> 00:02:33.439
We explored the genealogy of Abraham's family and where Joseph fit in the lineage of God's covenant people.
00:02:33.599 --> 00:02:40.240
We traced the geography of the story from Hebron to Shechem to Dotham, and finally toward Egypt.
00:02:40.479 --> 00:02:46.560
I saw how even the locations in this narrative reveal something beautiful about what God is doing.
00:02:46.800 --> 00:02:53.919
We stepped into the culture of the ancient Near East and discovered that Joseph's world operated very differently from our own.
00:02:54.159 --> 00:03:03.919
Honor and shame, birthrights and blessings, tribal identity, hospitality and trade routes all shaped the way people lived and understood these events.
00:03:04.240 --> 00:03:16.560
We explored the theological themes running through this chapter of deception and sacrifice and exile, kingdoms and covenants, and saw how these ideas are woven throughout the larger story of Scripture.
00:03:16.960 --> 00:03:22.560
Then we shifted our perspective even further and learned to read the story through the Middle Eastern lens.
00:03:22.960 --> 00:03:29.280
Instead of immediately asking what the text means for us, we asked the ancient questions why we God do that?
00:03:29.439 --> 00:03:31.759
And what does this passage tell me about God?
00:03:32.400 --> 00:03:36.159
Through these questions, we begin to see the character of God more clearly.
00:03:36.560 --> 00:03:46.159
A God who works quietly but intentionally, who keeps his promises across generations, and who can redeem even the darkest moments of human history.
00:03:46.960 --> 00:03:50.800
We also place Joseph's story within the grand narrative of the Bible.
00:03:50.960 --> 00:04:03.199
We saw how it connects to the anchor stories of Noah and Moses, how it carries the promise given to Abraham forward, and how Joseph's life ultimately prepares the way for something even greater.
00:04:04.400 --> 00:04:12.080
In the end, Joseph's story does not simply stand on its own, it points forward to Jesus Christ, the true and one and only Savior.
00:04:12.560 --> 00:04:19.279
And now we arrive at the question that almost everyone asks when they study the Bible how does this apply to me?
00:04:19.839 --> 00:04:25.360
But hopefully, after we've explored together over these last few months, we have learned something important.
00:04:26.079 --> 00:04:28.399
The Bible is not about us.
00:04:28.959 --> 00:04:34.959
While the Bible was written for us, it was not written to us, and it certainly was not written about us.
00:04:35.360 --> 00:04:43.040
So perhaps a better question to ask is how can I take everything I've discovered and carry it forward into my own life today?
00:04:43.279 --> 00:04:49.519
Because the purpose of studying scripture is not simply to gather information, the goal is transformation.
00:04:49.680 --> 00:04:52.560
The investigation was never meant to be the finish line.
00:04:52.720 --> 00:05:01.920
It was the pathway that helps us see God more clearly so that we can live more faithfully to become more like Him.
00:05:02.160 --> 00:05:06.959
And when we see God clearly, everything begins to change.
00:05:24.319 --> 00:05:32.639
There are three lessons, I believe, that rise to the surface of Joseph's story to tell us how this passage applies to us.
00:05:32.800 --> 00:05:38.399
How can we take these lessons that we have learned and carry them forward into our life today?
00:05:38.639 --> 00:05:43.360
Lesson number one is to learn to trust the character of God.
00:05:43.680 --> 00:05:52.720
One of the most important discoveries we made during the investigative phase is that the Bible reveals who God is before it tells us what to do.
00:05:52.959 --> 00:05:56.160
When we ask the Middle Eastern questions, why would God do that?
00:05:56.319 --> 00:05:58.639
And what does this passage tell me about God?
00:05:58.879 --> 00:06:01.680
Joseph's story began to look very different.
00:06:01.839 --> 00:06:08.560
Instead of focusing only on Joseph's circumstances, we started to see the character of God woven throughout his narrative.
00:06:08.800 --> 00:06:13.600
Joseph's story reveals a God who works quietly but intentionally.
00:06:13.920 --> 00:06:19.120
God never speaks in Genesis 37, and yet his fingerprints are everywhere.
00:06:19.360 --> 00:06:29.920
The timing of the caravan, the positioning of Joseph in Egypt, the preservation of a family, all of it points to a God who is orchestrating events behind the scenes.
00:06:30.240 --> 00:06:35.439
Joseph's story also reveals a God who keeps his promises across generations.
00:06:35.759 --> 00:06:41.680
The covenant given to Abraham is still moving forward, even through a family conflict and a famine.
00:06:42.000 --> 00:06:48.160
Human failure does not and will not cancel the divine faithfulness of God.
00:06:48.959 --> 00:06:55.519
And perhaps most importantly, Joseph's story reveals a God who can redeem even the darkest moments.
00:06:56.639 --> 00:07:02.639
The betrayal of his brothers becomes a pathway through which God preserves the entire people.
00:07:03.519 --> 00:07:07.839
The first application of Joseph's story is trust.
00:07:08.480 --> 00:07:11.279
Do we trust God to come through?
00:07:12.319 --> 00:07:17.519
Do we trust God not only when things are good but when things are really, really bad?
00:07:19.600 --> 00:07:27.279
Joseph teaches us that when we understand who God is, we can trust him even when we don't understand what he is doing.
00:07:29.040 --> 00:07:37.120
The second lesson I believe we take out of Joseph's story is this learn to see your life through God's story.
00:07:38.160 --> 00:07:41.680
Joseph's story teaches us how to interpret our own lives.
00:07:42.240 --> 00:07:50.720
When Joseph was thrown into a pit, sold into slavery, and taken to Egypt, none of these moments looked like the fulfillment of God's promise.
00:07:51.279 --> 00:07:54.079
None of these looked like his dreams.
00:07:54.720 --> 00:07:59.519
From Joseph's perspective, the story probably looked like a series of disasters.
00:08:00.240 --> 00:08:04.560
But from God's perspective, each of these moments was part of a larger plan.
00:08:05.199 --> 00:08:07.839
The pit positioned Joseph for the caravan.
00:08:08.079 --> 00:08:10.959
The caravan positioned Joseph for Egypt.
00:08:11.439 --> 00:08:13.839
Egypt positioned Joseph for leadership.
00:08:14.079 --> 00:08:18.160
And Joseph's leadership positioned him to save the nations.
00:08:18.639 --> 00:08:24.000
Joseph's story reminds us that God is often working in ways we cannot see in the moment.
00:08:24.480 --> 00:08:32.320
When we read Genesis from beginning to end, we can clearly see how every detail in Joseph's life fits into a larger plan.
00:08:32.559 --> 00:08:41.840
The dreams, the betrayal, the pit, the caravan, the years in Egypt, all of it is ultimately leading to the preservation of God's people.
00:08:42.240 --> 00:08:45.759
But Joseph himself could not see that when he was living through it.
00:08:46.000 --> 00:08:51.200
From Joseph's perspective, his life probably looked like a series of painful interruptions.
00:08:51.759 --> 00:09:00.879
One moment he was a favored son in his father's house, and the next he was alone in a pit, betrayed by the very people who were supposed to protect him.
00:09:01.360 --> 00:09:09.840
Many of us experience seasons that feel like Joseph's pit, seasons marked by confusion, loss, disappointment, or waiting.
00:09:10.240 --> 00:09:16.000
They are the moments of life where nothing seems to make sense, and the future feels uncertain.
00:09:16.240 --> 00:09:25.440
In those seasons, it is easy to assume that God has forgotten us, that we have somehow stepped outside of his plan, or that our story has taken a wrong turn.
00:09:25.679 --> 00:09:28.639
But Joseph's life shows us something different.
00:09:28.879 --> 00:09:37.519
What looks like the worst moment of his life was actually the beginning of God positioning him for something far greater than he could ever imagine.
00:09:37.759 --> 00:09:48.879
The pit led to the caravan, the caravan led to Egypt, Egypt led to influence, and that influence ultimately led to saving the nation and preserving God's covenant family.
00:09:49.200 --> 00:09:56.000
Joseph's story reminds us that what looks like a detour to us may actually be preparation in God's hands.
00:09:56.960 --> 00:09:59.759
God was not absent in Joseph's suffering.
00:10:00.559 --> 00:10:07.759
He was shaping Joseph's character, strengthening his faith, and positioning him in the exact place where he could eventually be used.
00:10:08.399 --> 00:10:12.000
Application then means learning to interpret our lives differently.
00:10:12.320 --> 00:10:19.840
Instead of viewing the circumstances as the final word, we begin to see them as part of a larger story that God is unfolding.
00:10:20.320 --> 00:10:25.360
It means learning to trust that God's faithfulness is greater than our present understanding.
00:10:25.679 --> 00:10:33.120
It also means recognizing that God uses every moment, both the good and the painful, to draw us closer to Himself.
00:10:33.360 --> 00:10:36.320
The seasons of blessings remind us of His goodness.
00:10:36.559 --> 00:10:40.480
The seasons of difficulty remind us of our dependence on Him.
00:10:40.720 --> 00:10:44.799
And together they shape a life that learns to trust Him more deeply.
00:10:45.120 --> 00:10:48.720
Joseph's story invites us to live with this kind of faith.
00:10:48.960 --> 00:10:55.759
The kind that believes God is writing the story even when we find ourselves in chapters we don't understand.
00:10:57.279 --> 00:11:02.480
Which brings us to lesson number three to look for the savior.
00:11:03.360 --> 00:11:09.919
This story, just like all the stories in scripture, are pointing us to Jesus, the ultimate savior.
00:11:10.320 --> 00:11:17.120
When we step back and look at the whole story, we realize that Joseph's life prepares us to recognize Jesus.
00:11:17.519 --> 00:11:21.279
Joseph is a beloved son who is rejected by his brothers.
00:11:21.600 --> 00:11:25.519
Jesus is a beloved son who is rejected by his people.
00:11:26.159 --> 00:11:29.120
Joseph is betrayed and sold for silver.
00:11:29.440 --> 00:11:33.039
Jesus is also betrayed and sold for silver.
00:11:33.360 --> 00:11:36.000
Joseph suffers before he is exalted.
00:11:36.320 --> 00:11:39.039
Jesus suffers before he is glorified.
00:11:39.360 --> 00:11:43.200
Joseph saves people from physical death during a famine.
00:11:43.440 --> 00:11:47.600
Jesus offers salvation from spiritual death for the entire world.
00:11:47.840 --> 00:11:52.320
Joseph's story whispers the gospel long before the cross appears.
00:11:52.639 --> 00:11:54.480
But here's the final twist.
00:11:54.879 --> 00:12:02.399
When we read Joseph's story, we often assume we are Joseph, the faithful one who suffers and eventually triumphs.
00:12:02.720 --> 00:12:07.679
But the truth is, many times we are much more like the brothers.
00:12:07.919 --> 00:12:10.000
We are the ones who need forgiveness.
00:12:10.240 --> 00:12:14.799
We are the ones who whose brokenness requires redemption.
00:12:15.039 --> 00:12:17.440
And that's why Jesus matters.
00:12:17.919 --> 00:12:27.440
Jesus is the one true Savior, the rejected son who forgives those who wronged him and offers life to the very people who betrayed him.
00:12:27.840 --> 00:12:32.240
Joseph's story were prepares us to recognize that kind of savior.
00:12:32.480 --> 00:12:37.120
And when we see Jesus clearly, we begin to see our own lives differently.
00:12:37.360 --> 00:12:39.600
We begin to trust God more deeply.
00:12:39.759 --> 00:12:42.480
We begin to read scripture more carefully.
00:12:42.879 --> 00:12:48.320
We begin to recognize that our story is a part of the grand story of God's family.
00:12:48.720 --> 00:12:54.720
The same God who guided Joseph through the pit to Egypt is guiding us today.
00:12:55.039 --> 00:12:58.080
He is working all things for our good.
00:12:59.039 --> 00:13:04.639
As we close this first season of The Rabbi Way, I want to thank you for walking through Joseph's story with me.
00:13:04.879 --> 00:13:14.080
Together we slowed down, asked better questions, and explored the world of the text, and discovered that the Bible is far richer than we even realize.
00:13:14.320 --> 00:13:23.200
We saw how Joseph's story connects to the great anchor stories of scripture, how it reveals the character of God and how it ultimately points us to Jesus.
00:13:23.440 --> 00:13:36.080
But more than that, we learned a way of reading the Bible, not rushing straight to application, but first investigating the story, understanding its context, and asking what it reveals about God.
00:13:36.480 --> 00:13:41.120
Because when we see God more clearly, our lives begin to change.
00:13:41.440 --> 00:13:50.240
Joseph's story reminds me that God is always at work, even in the pit, even in exile, even in seasons of waiting.
00:13:50.480 --> 00:13:55.600
The same God who guided Joseph's life is guiding his people right now.
00:13:56.000 --> 00:14:06.720
So as you continue to read scripture, keep asking questions, keep looking for connections, keep tracing the story of God's faithfulness from Genesis to Revelation.
00:14:06.960 --> 00:14:12.480
And remember, when we read the Bible this way, we aren't just studying the book.
00:14:12.720 --> 00:14:16.159
We are learning to walk in the dust of our rabbi.
00:14:16.799 --> 00:14:20.639
Until next time, remember every story in the Bible is intentional.
00:14:20.879 --> 00:14:24.639
Every detail is significant, every person is critical.
00:14:24.879 --> 00:14:27.120
This is the greatest story ever told.
00:14:27.200 --> 00:14:33.679
And if we take the time to slow down and pay attention, we will experience God like never before.
00:14:33.919 --> 00:14:35.360
See you next time.
00:14:45.919 --> 00:14:48.159
